Storylines, or How to Deal with Misunderstandings

This is not about being a paperless principal, but using this strategy may save you paper later. ;)
#Have You Experienced a Storyline?
Have you ever gotten that “look” from your boss? You know the look, you know you are in trouble. You know you messed up and your boss is angry and ready to fire you!
Have you ever seen someone and thought, that person has no desire to see or interact with me! What did I do wrong?
When you have these interactions, you are creating a storyline. And what I am going to tell you about dealing with storylines will make every relationship in your life better.
#What Exactly is a Storyline?
A storyline is any story you tell yourself in your kind about any interaction you have with another person where you are not 100% positive about what the other person intended. A storyline is making assumptions about what someone said or meant.
A storyline is not feeling hurt when someone really did try to hurt you. A storyline is not avoiding listening to a real concern.
A storyline is something we make up, with very little justification (and a part of the storyline is making up more justification for our hurt feelings).
Sometimes our storylines come from an email that sounded too terse or frustrated or impolite.
#How to Deal With Storylines
*Share this post with the important people in your life.
*Establish the word “storyline” as a safe word. “When we say storyline, there is no judgement allowed.” This is so incredibly vital! If storyline is not really safe, people will never use it again.
*When you have a moment where there is a storyline, approach the person and tell them you have a storyline. Ask if it is a good time to get a clarification.
*Discuss your storyline with words like “I felt…”
*Get clarification from the other party.
*Feel better about life and your relationships.
This is a great strategy for anyone who deals with any other human beings in their life.
#How Storylines Have Affected My Life
Within just a couple weeks of learning this important strategy, I had many instances where frustration and fear were avoided. Instances where I had a storyline, and instances where my teachers had storylines. It is amazing how effective this strategy is at defusing tense situations, helping people overcome their fears, and bringing trust to relationships. It works with spouses, bosses, employees, parents, and students.
